Lufthansa Plans Flights to Iraq from Mid-2010

German flag carrier Lufthansa said Tuesday it was looking into the possibility of operating commercial flights to Iraq from its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich later this year.

The airline said it hoped to offer flights to the capital Baghdad and the city of Erbil in northern Iraq’s Kurdish region.

“Lufthansa aims to launch the new services in the summer of 2010, once it has obtained the necessary traffic rights,” the firm said in a statement.

The airline operated flights to Baghdad from 1956 but stopped them in 1990 after the first Gulf War broke out.
