According to the Ministry of Transport, on Sunday, Iraqi General Company for Ports signed a joint venture contract with French company CMA to establish a terminal container and berth No.4 in Umm Qasr port for three years.
The ministry said that the contract included “to ensure the company purchased modern equipment remains in favor of Iraqi ports in the event of contract termination , the project cost 20 million dollars ,and there are several other contracts preparing to be signed in berth No. 5 and berth No. 8 soon “.
This experiment will develop the port as it will speed up the unloading of ships and increased depths of ports, which in turn will receive the largest number of ships and commercial vessels, as well as lift sunk marine vessels.
Minister of Transportation, Amir Abdul-Jabbar Ismail, said that “Iraq desperately needs a partnership with the private sector, but within an objective study.”
Iraq Ports Corporation had previously reported that a French company completed the project to prepare the berth No. 4 in Umm Qasr port, indicating that the pavement is the second biggest wharf for container handling at the port .
