Iraq Deputy Agriculture Minister Sobhi Al Jamili said that Iraq would double it’s wheat production this year to 2.5 million tonnes due to climatic conditions which should enable Iraq to provide half of the total wheat consumption it needs.
Al Jamili said that Iraq Premier Nouri Al Maliki has approved a project submitted by the Ministry of Agriculture at a cost of 70 million dollars. The program aims to enhance irrigation systems for about 2 million acres for wheat production. Jamili said he hopes that Iraq will stop importing wheat by the end of 2014.
Jamili said Iraq is expected to harvest 300,000 tonnes of barley compared with 226,000 tones last year. Barley is mainly used as fodder for livestock in the country.
