A conference on Private Sector Development in Iraq opened on Tuesday in Erbil’s Sa’ed Abdullah Hall. The two-day conference is hosted jointly by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Erbil Governorate.
Simon Marinso, UNDP Coordinator for Private Sector Development in Iraq told AK News that 30 Directors General from all Kurdistan Ministries have attended the conference.
UNDP is working on private sector development since 2008 in Erbil, Anbar and Basrah Provinces in the first phase, according to Marinso.
“The Conference aims to promote private sector efficiency in Iraq, and to ease the burden on the government for implementing projects”, said Tahir Abdullah, Erbil Deputy Governor and the Head of the Supervising Committee for the event.
Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has increased its efforts to support the private sector, Abdullah added, saying that KRG is keen to apply the free market system in Kurdistan.
“Our people are mainly consumers but we hope they become producers”, Abdullah concluded.
