The Iraqi Minister of Municipalities, Riad Ghareeb, and the governor of Najaf, Adnan Al-Zurfi, have announced the start of the urban renewal project of the old city.
Riad Ghareeb told Aknews during his meeting with al-Zurfi and some members of the executing company, “the renewal project for the old city center of Najaf has been launched … the project is particularly important now that Najaf is the capital of the Islamic Culture.”
The city of Najaf has been chosen as the Capital of Islamic Culture in 2012.
The project is already underway, and will be completed in under a year. A British company is understood to be leading the project.
Najaf’s governor, Adnan Zurfi, said the project was part of the strategic plans that support the tourism sector in the province, providing huge spaces for the visitors, and re-generating the historic scenery of the old city; subsequently it will maintain and improve its Islamic features.
