Allawi U-Turn on Oil Contracts?

The al-Iraqiya political coalition, which includes prime-ministerial candidate Ayad Allawi, has stated its objection to the outgoing government’s rounds of licensing gas and oil investments by foreign companies, regarding them as breaching the constitution and violating the law, according to a report from AKnews. This might expose the Ministry’s officials to legal accountability by the new parliament in the future.

Al Iraqiya reportedly said in a statement that, “the oil investment licences granted by the outgoing government, led by Nouri al-Maliki, are illegal and against the law and the Iraqi constitution. It’s taking the political and institutional vacuum for granted.”

If the comments reported by AKnews are correct, they contradict an assurance by Allawi in April that the oil and gas contracts would be honoured.
