New Dam Planned for Shaqlawa

The Kurdistan Regional Government has decided to construct a large dam in the village of Aqhoban in the Hiran region, in the district Shaqlawah [Shaqlawa].

The Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources has allocated more than six billion dinars for the project, which will be implemented by the two companies;  work will start in the coming days and is intended to be completed within 730 days.

The objectives of the dam are to collect rain water and water from nearby springs to irrigate arable land and raise the level of groundwater, and to generate electricity.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources has identified several locations in the Kurdistan Region that may be suitable for dams.
