Cornerstone Laid at Shatt al-Arab Canal Project

Iraq’s Minister of Water Resources, Abdul-Latif Jamal Rashid, has laid the corner stone for the 350 billion dinar [$300m] Shatt al-Arab Canal project, aimed at pumping pure water for Basra Province and irrigation water for 250,000 donums of agricultural lands, according to a report from Aswat al-Iraq.

Iraq’s Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki, had launched a general initiative to increase the country’s agricultural capacity in July, 2007, with a 10-year plan to achieve self-sustainability in “strategic crops.”

The initiative included, among other goals, supplying farmers with seeds, fertilizers, agricultural insecticides, as well as lands reforms and guaranteeing the purchase of their so-called “strategic crops” at market prices, along with the monitoring of agricultural and animal diseases and granting financial assistance for farmers.
