Are New Import Licences Strangling Iraqi Trade?

Iraq Business News is receiving reports of serious disruption to commerce in Iraq caused by new requirements for import licences introduced at the start of the year.

According to the newspaper al Sabaah, the new requirements have led to major delays and backlogs of traffic at border crossings and ports, and as a result the Government has suspended the new requirements for a period of 15 days in order to help alleviate the backlog.

We have also been approached directly by businesses that are very concerned about the effect of the new regulations on trade, especially at a time when Iraq should be focusing on facilitating free trade rather than trying to restrict it.

If you or your business has been affected by these new licencing requirements, or if you have any additional information on the situation, we’d appreciate your feedback in the Comments section below.
