Syria Plans to Boost Relations with Iraq

The Syrian Trade and Economy Minister, Lamyaa Assi, says her country is planning to deepen “historic and strategic” Syrian-Iraqi relations.

The Syrian Minister spoke to AKnews correspondent in Egypt as the Arab trade and economy ministers are coming together in the Sharam al-Sheikh resort to discuss economic development.

Iraq and Syria will develop a strategic, deep and long-term cooperation plan covering different sectors including trade, railway, roads, and oil and gas, says Assi.

“We agreed on these projects during the visit of the Syrian Prime Minister recently to Iraq,”

Syrian Prime Minister arrived in Baghdad on Saturday following a formal invitation by the Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to hold talks on consolidating multidimensional ties between the two countries.

“There are many important agreements that we have signed with the former Iraqi Trade Minister… and among these agreements is creating joint free zones between the two countries to facilitate the movement of transit, trade and economic relations between the two countries.” said the Syrian Trade Minister.
