Masoud Barzani, President of Iraqi Kurdistan, held a meeting on Wednesday with the prime minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), the speaker of Kurdistan Parliament, and leaders and representatives of political parties in the region to exchange views on how to fight corruption and make the KRG’s institutions more efficient.
President Barzani said it is the responsibility of all sides to introduce reforms, including the government, the parliament, the opposition, political parties and other institutions. He proposed each party draws up a plan on how to introduce reforms and tackle corruption, and for these proposals to be discussed in a future meeting for submission to the Kurdistan Region Presidency. The President also referred to the need to merge Kurdistan’s security agencies.
“We are new in practicing governance and still have a lot to learn. We acknowledge we have shortcomings and weaknesses but I am determined to combat corruption and introduce reforms. Together, let us make this the year of preserving our unity, fighting corruption, and finalising the integration of the KRG security institutions.” said President Barzani.
The President’s proposal met with backing from those at the meeting who were unanimous that combating corruption and inefficiency in government was everyone’s responsibility. This meeting follows an earlier one in late January at which all sides agreed that the government, the opposition, and civil society organizations together should tackle Kurdistan’s problems.
