The Kurdistan Regional Government’s Head of Foreign Relations Minister Falah Mustafa Bakir today welcomed to Erbil his counterpart from the Veneto Region of Italy.
Minister Bakir and the KRG’s Representative to Italy Ms Rezan Kadir together met Dr Diego Vecchiato, the Director of the Department of International Relations of the Veneto Regional Government.
On his second visit to Kurdistan, Dr Vecchiato said he was glad to witness the continued progress and success of the Region and the growth of its relations with the international community. He thanked Minister Bakir for his department’s warm reception and its assistance in arranging his programme.
The two sides spoke of the recent political developments in Iraq and in the Middle East as a whole, and discussed Kurdistan’s economic growth. Minister Bakir said, ‘The success of the Kurdistan Region is due to our leaders’ clear vision for the future. We want to achieve greater prosperity as our people’s expectations increase every day, and we are determined to succeed.’
Minister Bakir highlighted the KRG’s Human Capacity Development Programme (HCDP), conveying the KRG’s belief that scholarship programmes abroad are an investment in the future and the hope that they will help to realise the true potential of the region. Dr Vecchiato pledged to discuss the programme with universities in Italy and to encourage them to welcome the region’s students. Minister Bakir also encouraged Dr Vecchiato to explore the many investment opportunities in the region, including tourism, agriculture, and industry.
In February this year, the KRG signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Veneto Regional Government to expand their ties. Both sides expressed their continued support for the agreement as part of each government’s outreach programme with the international community, and stressed the importance of its implementation on the ground. They also underscored the need for exchange programmes and visits.
During his three-day trip, Dr Vecchiato also met Deputy Prime Minister Azad Berwari; the Minister for Finance and the Economy Bayiz Saeed Mohammad Talabani, and the Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources Jamil Sleiman Haider.
