More than 40,000 tourists entered Iraqi Kurdistan Region for the New Year celebrations, roughly four times as many as the previous record, AKnews reports.
The press secretary for the Kurdistan General Tourism Board, Nadr Rosti, told the news agency that in 2011 more than 10,000 tourists visited Kurdistan during the New Year.
But in the past two days more than 40,000 tourists entered Kurdistan, each carrying at least $200.
Hotels, motels, tourist villages and restaurants across the three provinces of Kurdistan [Erbil, Sulaimaniya and Duhok] are swarming with tourists, Hersh Ahmed, head of Kurdistan restaurants and hotels told AKnews.
He added that with 365 hotels, 168 motels and 43 tourist villages, Kurdistan can host up to 50,000 guests.
