Housing Minister Proposes Standardised House Design

By John Lee.

Iraq’s Minister of Housing and Reconstruction, Mohamed Sahib al-Daraji [Mohammed Al-Deraji] (pictured), has launched an initiative to establish a unified Arabic house design.

During a conference of Arab Ministers of Housing and Reconstruction, the minister said:

Starting from 2013, the modern designs will match the modern construction techniques and the old forms of construction will be abandoned.

“The problem of the housing in Iraq necessitates making use of Arab expertise in this field … We were shown 130 [proposals] where we have chosen 40.

“The housing problem needs three things: preparation of land areas, funding, and quick and wise management away from bureaucracy … We focused in our selection on those  [proposals] that benefit Iraq.
