The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, David S. Cohen (pictured), visited Iraq to continue the Treasury Department’s work on countering threats posed by terrorist financing, as well as the implementation of international sanctions against the governments of Iran and Syria.
In a series of productive meetings with senior Iraqi officials, Under Secretary Cohen discussed the importance of the economic sanctions that are in place to pressure the Iranian government to address international concerns about its nuclear program.
The Under Secretary also discussed the continued coordination with the Iraqi government to disrupt the flow of terrorist financing in the region, including in Iraq and Syria, particularly as al-Qaeda and its affiliates attempt to move money and fighters throughout the region.
Under Secretary Cohen emphasized to his interlocutors in the Iraqi government and banking sector the importance that the United States attaches to international cooperation in combating the financing of terrorism.
