A political analyst says tensions are likely to increase between Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region and the central government.
President of the Kurdistan region Massoud Barzani has stated intention to run for a third president term despite holding two terms, which according to law bars him from reentering the election process.
He has established a foreign policy that contradicts the central government in Baghdad. The tension rose after he made a controversial oil deal with Turkey and more so when he harbored Iraq’s fugitive Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi before he left for Turkey.
