“The objective of the two-year programme, which is funded by the EU and implemented by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), is to support the IHCHR in implementing its mandate to promote and protect human rights in Iraq”, said Ambassador Jana Hybáškova, at the first Steering Committee meeting.
She also stressed that “the EU is committed to support Iraq in building its institutions and considers the promotion of human rights as one of the priorities in the relationship between the EU and Iraq”.
Welcoming the decision by the EU to support, through the UN, the IHCHR, Mr. Mladenov emphasized that Iraqi citizens and the international community have great expectations with regard to the work of the IHCHR.
“The United Nations hope that by the end of the EU-funded programme the operational capacity of the Commission will be strengthened making it an institution able to effectively protect Iraqis and their fundamental rights”, he stated.
Commissioner Mesrur, the IHCHR coordinator for international relations, highlighted the importance of this new program in strengthening the capacity of the Commission, as well as the necessity of a strong coordination between the IHCHR, the EU, and the UN for its implementation.
