KRG Welcomes new UK Consul General

The Head of the KRG Department of Foreign Relations (DFR), Minister Falah Mustafa, received the new British Consul General to Kurdistan Region, Mr Angus McKee.

During the meeting which was attended by Ms Siham Jabali, Assistant Head of the DFR, Minister Mustafa congratulated Mr McKee on his new posting and expressed the DFR’s readiness to further support the United Kingdom’s Consulate General in Erbil.

During the meeting, Minster Mustafa said that his predecessor played an important role in strengthening bilateral ties between the UK and Kurdistan Region, expressing his hope that Mr McKee would work to further enhance the existing ties.

Mr McKee said that he was pleased to have been appointed as the new British Consul General to the Kurdistan Region and reiterated his country’s commitment to further developm political, economic, cultural, and educational ties with the Kurdistan Region.

Minister Mustafa, said, “We appreciate Britain’s continued support and commitment to Kurdistan, and we want to encourage these efforts to further strengthening our ties, especially in the fields of education, culture and trade.”

Minister Mustafa also briefed Mr McKee on the current political and security crisis facing Iraq and the overall situation of the Syrian refugees and the internally displaced people who have fled from the violence in other parts of Iraq to seek security and shelter in Kurdistan.

Mr McKee commended the KRG on providing humanitarian support for the Syrian refugees and the internally displaced people and expressed the readiness of the UK government to provide humanitarian support for fleeing civilians taking refuge in the Kurdistan Region.

Both sides reiterated their commitment to the strategic importance of the bilateral relationship, discussing plans to further expand fields of cooperation, as agreed in Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani’s official visit to London earlier this year and the UK Foreign Secretary’s visit to Erbil last month.

Mr Mckee recently arrived in Kurdistan in order to assume the duties of UK Consul General after the departure of his predecessor, Mr Hugh Evans.
