Defense Minister Outlines Priorities

After a conversation with American Defense Secretary Hagel, the new, Iraqi Minister of Defense Khaled al-Obeidi (pictured) reaffirmed his commitment to reform the Iraqi security forces in the face of the ongoing threat from the Islamic State (IS).

He told Hagel that he intended to go on the offensive against IS fighters, to ensure proper training and supply of his troops, and to create a fighting force that is representative of all ethnic sects in Iraq.

Al-Obeidi, a Sunni Muslim from the city of Mosul and was approved by the Iraqi Parliament on Saturday for the position.
