Sweden’s Minister for Defense, Peter Hultqvist, received Minister Falah Mustafa, Head of KRG Foreign Relations, and his accompanying delegation on Wednesday to exchange views on the latest security developments in the Kurdistan Region and the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS).
Mr. Mustafa briefed the defense minister on latest developments on the ground and stressed the need for further regional and international assistance to Peshmerga forces.
Reiterating the KRG’s commitment to defend civilians and members of different religious and ethnic minorities against barbarism, the KRG minister stated, “Peshmerga forces have become the spearhead of the fight against ISIS. They have proven to be a reliable force on the ground to confront the extremists.”
Commending the role of Kurdistan Region in preserving the stability of the Region, Defense Minister Hultqvist said, “The Swedish government has decided to explore the possibility of sending military advisors to Erbil. It is important for us to participate in international efforts against extremists.”
He added, “ISIS is a threat to civilization. The civilized world must work together to eradicate extremism. This is a fight between civilization and barbarism and we have to find ways to win it.”
Mr Karwan Jamal, Deputy Head of DFR, Mr. Shoresh Qadir, KRG Representative to Sweden, as well as senior officials from the Sweden’s defense ministry attended the meeting.
