General George Allen, coordinator of the international coalition fighting against the Islamic State (IS), announced that the Iraqi Security Forces would begin a ground offensive against the group in the coming weeks. The offensive will be supported by the international coalition’s airpower. The coalition has launched over 2,000 airstrikes against the Islamic State since August.
The American general dismissed claims that the United States had delayed sending supplies and military advisors to Iraq over the previous weeks.
A leak in November 2014 indicated that the offensive aims to cut off the groups supply routes from Syria, and then retake the city of Mosul by the end of 2015.
