The Acting Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (DSRSG), Gyorgy Busztin, today welcomed Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi’s proposed reforms aimed at improving the lives of the Iraqi people, rationalizing state institutions and rooting out corruption.
“I welcome the reform proposals of Prime Minister Abadi. These proposals come at a time when more and more people are demanding reform and efficiency”, DSRSG Busztin said.
“Corruption and inefficiency create widespread and rightful dissatisfaction, which in turn, can be manipulated by terrorist groups for their own ends”, Busztin added.
“Reforms that eliminate corruption, streamline state institutions, bring much needed expertise into government, and improve service delivery to the people will strengthen national unity and accelerate reconciliation at a time all honest Iraqis need to combine their efforts in the fight against terror”, concluded DSRSG Busztin.
Shafaaq quotes the Assistant of US State Department spokesman, Mark Toner, as saying “We applaud this courageous step that showed all political forces in Iraq united and the approval on the political reforms paper,” adding that the United States will support the efforts of Abadi’s Government.
