Western Diplomats Assure Commitment to Boost Oil Output in Basra

US Ambassador to Iraq Christopher Hill said Tuesday the international community was committed to helping Iraq increase its oil production.

Hill, on a visit to Basra within a delegation of British, Dutch, Japanese and Italian diplomats as well as executives from international oil companies, said the US and other countries sought to speed up the development of the oil sector in Basra to achieve develoment and create jobs for Iraqis.

The representative of Shell said the company planned to drill 15 oil wells in southern Iraqi Majnoon field in next two years, while Italy's Eni said it would increase production of Zubair oil field to 250,000 barrels per day (bpd), a statement by the US embassy in Baghdad said.

Hill, according to the statement, said oil of Iraq belonged to the Iraqis.

The Japanese charge d'affaires said Japanese companies were looking forward for a speedy formation of the government in Iraq to seriously consider investments in Iraq
