Baghdad, USAID Agree on Economic Balance

Inadequate infrastructure, in turn, constricts private sector economic activities outside the oil sector. A growing population, with 350,000 young Iraqis entering the workforce each year, presents a challenge which can only be met with greater private sector employment.

The report examined a number of economic sectors such as freight and logistics, housing construction and greenhouse horticulture. These sectors present opportunities where government intervention and reform would yield significant dividends. It recommends developing sustainable financing mechanisms for all core services (water, electricity, roads, health) and channeling oil and gas revenues to build the infrastructure necessary for non-oil based growth.

PMAC intends to distribute the report within the Council of Representatives, the top ranks of the civil service and academic institutions in the expectation that its recommendations will be studied and implemented in the future when new economic policies are established.
