A suicide bomber has assassinated a Sunni MP in Fallujah on Tuesday.
Ayfan Sadoun al-Essawi [Ifan Saadoun], a member of the secular Sunni-backed Iraqiya bloc, was targeted as he inspected a road being constructed to the south of the city. Two of the MP's bodyguards were killed and four other people wounded.
The attack comes two days after a convoy carrying Iraq's Sunni finance minister, Rafia al-Issawi, who is from the same tribe and political bloc as the MP, was struck by a bomb as he traveled to the city.
The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in Iraq (SRSG), Martin Kobler, condemned in the strongest possible terms what he described as "the heinous killing of Anbar Member of Parliament".
"I call again on all political forces to foil any attempt at instigating strife and to demonstrate utmost restraint," the SRSG said, adding that political dialogue must be resumed without further delay to exit from the current situation.
