The American University of Iraq, Sulaimani [Sulaymaniah] (AUIS) announced today that it is the beneficiary of a generous donation from Genel Energy.
The bequest of $20 million USD, which was facilitated by the Kurdistan Regional Government and is part of Genel’s commitments to enhance the infrastructure of the Kurdistan Region, enables AUIS to continue to serve the population with high-quality, student-centered, American-style higher education.
“The University could not be more honored by the trust in our mission that this contribution signals,” said AUIS President, Dr. Athanasios Moulakis. “We are grateful to Genel, the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Natural Resources, and the Ministry of Higher Education for their support.”
The unrestricted donation will be used to sustain the university’s operating costs. As part of the agreement the University will report regularly to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Genel Energy about how the funds are being used.
“AUIS is a jewel not only in the Kurdish heartland but in the whole of Iraq,” said Mehmet Sepil, President of Genel Energy. “We have been observing its achievements since its inception. We believe it will turn out to be an academic and cultural center attractive to academicians, intellectuals, and young generations in a wider region. It is this belief that has steered us to contribute to AUIS.”
AUIS is proud to have been the recipient of a number of donations from benefactors such as Genel that believe in the institution’s potential to build capacity. “Our motto is ‘let there be light,’” continued Genel’s Sepil. “What more can be said today, regarding all the dark and tangled problems we all face in this geography—let there be light. And to accomplish that illumination, AUIS shall hold high the torch. We, as Genel Energy, are proud to be part and parcel of the development of this enlightening institution.”
