In statements made to the Financial Times, Turkish officials have encouraged the United States to allow American businesses to import Kurdish oil.
They argued that the United States should support the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) economically as Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, ISIS) has been able to directly profit from sales of their captured oil fields.
“This is urgent: ISIS is now selling its oil, but the Kurds are not allowed to sell their oil,” said a Turkish official.
The American government has sided with the central Iraqi government in Baghdad in an attempt to maintain the unity of the Iraqi state. Turkey has been a supporter of Kurdish oil sales because of its own increasing domestic energy demands.
