In a meeting in London on Friday with the Kurdistan Region’s Chancellor of the Security Council, Masrour Barzani, British Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said, UK is planning to provide more advanced weaponry at the nearest opportunity to the Peshmarga forces.
He stressed that there is no political limit in supporting the Peshmerga, adding that the Kurdistan Region is in the forefront confronting ISIS terrorism.
He also highlighted the steadfastness of the Peshmerga forces and the people of the Region, and the support of the international coalition. He affirmed the UK will enhance coordination and provide additional weapons, ammunition, and training.
Present in the meeting, the British Prime Minister’s Security Envoy to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Lieutenant General Sir Simon Mayall, reaffirmed his country's support to the Kurdistan Region and Psheshmarga forces.
Thanking the British government for its support, the Chancellor said, “the people of Kurdistan and the Peshmerga forces are fighting the terrorists on behalf of the free world. Therefore, the international community and the coalition forces must work harder to arm the Peshmerga forces and provide advanced weaponry.”
He explained that “the provision of heavy and advanced weaponry has so far not reached the required level and asked that this issue be resolved soon so that the Peshmerga forces can defeat the terrorists and degrade their capabilities and threats”.
Earlier, in his European tour, the Chancellor of Security Council of the Kurdistan Region, Masrour Barzani, spoke to the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament on November 4 in Brussels. He explained various issues pertaining to the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, the fight against terror, the desperate situation of displaced people, political situation in the Middle East, and the role of the United States and Europe in the region.
