Iraq's General Union of Cooperative Agricultural Associations met with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani on Saturday.
During the meeting, he listened to various proposals and discussions concerning farmers and the agricultural sector's improvement.
PM Al-Sudani emphasized the union's critical role as a mediator between the government and farmers. He reiterated the government's priority to support and advance agriculture, aiming to reduce dependency on the oil sector and use oil revenues to develop other sectors, including agriculture.
The Prime Minister confirmed the ongoing disbursement of farmers' dues and announced higher purchase prices for crops from farmers using modern irrigation systems compared to traditional methods, adding that Iraq has imported 12,000 irrigation systems.
He also highlighted that the water management agreement with Turkey will significantly boost Iraq's agricultural sector. Furthermore, farmers will receive support through domestically produced fertilizers, and import restrictions on fertilizers will be lifted.
