By John Lee.

The Ministry of Transport has announced the first Iraqi Airways flight to Tunisia aboard a modern Airbus A220, marking the national carrier's newest destination.

This inaugural flight from Baghdad to Tunis is set to be followed by scheduled routes in the coming days. The development follows discussions between Iraq's Minister of Transport, Razzaq Muhaibis Al-Saadawi, and Tunisia's Minister of Transport, Sarra Zaâfrani Zenzeri, aiming to establish a direct connection between the two capitals.

Iraqi Airways has recently expanded its network with new routes to Beijing, Guangzhou, Kuala Lumpur, and other key destinations. In July alone, the airline operated 1,859 flights, serving 272,972 passengers, resulting in a significant revenue increase of 89% compared to 2023.

Efforts are ongoing to lift the European ban on Iraqi Airways, with significant progress made in reactivating grounded aircraft-11 planes have already been returned to service, with more expected this year and next. The company plans to further extend its reach globally, supported by a fleet of 13 newly acquired aircraft, including Dreamliner, Max, and Airbus models. By 2027, Iraqi Airways aims to complete the acquisition of 31 modern aircraft, positioning the airline for extensive network expansion.
