Iraq Boosts Gas Export Capacity with New Terminal

By John Lee.

Iraq's Ministry of Oil has announced the opening of a second terminal for the export of liquid gas and condensates at Umm Qasr Port in Basra.

The new facility, inaugurated by Deputy Minister for Gas Affairs, Izzat Saber Ismail, will enhance export flexibility, increasing current monthly export capacity from 50 tons to an expected 80 tons by early 2025, with the potential to reach 125 tons per month as production rates rise.

The ministry also noted ongoing strategic projects to boost gas utilization, aiming to increase gas investment to 70 percent by the end of the year. The project reflects a collaboration between the Southern Gas Company (SGC) and Basra Gas Company (BGC), achieving a surplus in liquid gas production beyond local consumption needs.
