Iraq signs Gas Field Development Contract

By John Lee.

The Iraqi Ministry of Oil has signed a contract to develop the Mansuriya gas field in Diyala province.

The contract, awarded to a consortium of China's Jereh (represented by Mr. Li Weibin, the managing director of Jera), and Petro Iraq, aims to increase gas production by 300 million cubic feet per day.

This project is part of Iraq's larger plan to enhance domestic gas resources, following the recent signing of 14 additional contracts expected to add 850 million cubic feet of gas and 750,000 barrels of crude oil to national production.

The initial production from the field is expected to start at 100 MMcf/d and reach over 300 MMcf/d, which will supply the Mansuriya gas plant, marking a significant advancement in the dry gas sector, particularly in Diyala Province.

Mansuriyah gas field was originally granted in Iraq's third licensing round (2010) to TPAO (37.5%), Oil Exploration Company (25%), Kuwait Energy (KEC) (22.5%), Kogas (15%). That contract was reported to have been cancelled in 2020. A new deal was signed with Sinopec in January 2022. In mid-2023, press reports suggest that the Sinopec deal was in doubt, following requests from the company to amend the contract.
