Iraq's Minister of Communications, Dr. Hayam Al-Yasiri, announced the Cabinet's approval of British multinational Vodafone as the operator for the national 5G mobile licence.
The decision follows recommendations from the Ministry's negotiation team.
The Ministry will formally notify Vodafone to begin negotiations on a memorandum of understanding, outlining preparatory steps for project implementation. Dr. Al-Yasiri highlighted Vodafone's global reputation, extensive expertise in 5G technology, and presence across the Middle East as key factors behind its selection.
The project, fully state-owned, aims to deliver advanced telecom services, boost national revenues, align with technological advancements, and create opportunities for Iraqi youth. Vodafone has expressed readiness to collaborate with Iraq for the project's success.
Last year, the Iraqi Cabinet agreed that the Communications and Media Commission (CMC) will grant an exclusive three-year national license for 5G mobile technology to the Al-Salam State Company, a subsidiary of the Ministry of Communications. Al Salam this week banned access to the IMDb movie database on morality grounds.
