Construction Starts at North Thermal Power Plant in Nineveh

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani inaugurated the construction of Phase One of the North Thermal Power Plant in Nineveh Province on Sunday, during his visit to the region.

According to his office, this marks a significant milestone in Iraq's efforts to strengthen its power infrastructure and revive critical projects.

Project Overview:

• Capacity:
  • Phase One: 700 megawatts.
  • Total: 1,400 megawatts across four generating units (each 350 megawatts).
  • Expandable to six units.
• Framework: The project is part of the Chinese Framework Agreement, ensuring international collaboration and advanced engineering standards.

Historical Challenges:

• Initially halted in 1990 due to geopolitical challenges.
• Briefly resumed in 2000, then stopped again in 2003.
• Suffered significant damage during ISIS's occupation of Mosul.
