Iraq considers Smart Meters for Water Management

By John Lee.

Professor Dr. Mahmoud Saleh Al-Khafaji of the Department of Water Resources Engineering at the University of Baghdad chaired a meeting organised by the Prime Minister's Office Adviser for Scientific, Academic, and Artificial Intelligence Affairs to explore smart digital solutions for water system management in Iraq.

The session featured presentations on advanced technologies, including smart water meters capable of reading, recording, and transmitting data to centralised databases. Participants examined the use of these tools in monitoring and managing urban water distribution systems, weighing both their benefits and limitations.

The meeting concluded with proposals to pilot these technologies through case studies in Baghdad and other provinces, aiming to enhance national water resource efficiency.
