Successful Mangrove Cultivation on Shatt al-Arab Coast

By John Lee.

The Ministry of Agriculture has announced the successful cultivation of mangrove trees along the Shatt al-Arab coastline in the Ras al-Bisha area of Basra province.

The initiative, led by the Basra Directorate of Agriculture, was fully supported by the Ministry, which facilitated all necessary requirements for its implementation.

Dr. Lubna Ali, Head of the Horticulture and Forestry Division at the Basra Agriculture Directorate, detailed the project's development, which began in 2019 and progressed to the successful introduction of mangrove plants into local nurseries. Over 1,000 mangrove trees have since been transplanted and established along the seashore, following approvals and logistical support from the Ministry.

The project is expected to deliver several environmental benefits, including:

  • Coastal protection against erosion
  • Improved marine biodiversity by creating habitats for aquatic species and attracting birds
  • Fish conservation in planted areas
  • Expansion of green spaces and overall environmental improvement
  • Reduction in climate change impacts such as rising temperatures
