Jordan and Iraq Extend Electricity Supply Agreement

By John Lee.

Jordan's National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) has announced an agreement with Iraq to extend the electricity supply contract for one year.

NEPCO's Director General, Dr. Sufyan Bataineh, confirmed that, at Iraq's request, the company will continue providing power from Jordan's grid to Iraq's Al-Rutba region until September 2026, or until the planned 400 kV Jordan-Iraq interconnection line is operational.

The extension follows a meeting in Amman between Dr. Bataineh and Eng. Riyadh Araibi, Director General of Iraq's General Company for Electricity Transmission - Central Region, along with his delegation.

Jordan reaffirmed its readiness to energise the 400 kV interconnection from the Risha substation, while the Iraqi side expects to complete work on its section of the project within six months.

The interconnection is intended as a first step toward synchronised grid integration between the two countries, enhancing energy security and stability while strengthening bilateral cooperation.
