Karpowership Signs Agreement to Supply Floating Power to Iraq

By John Lee.

BKPS, an affiliate of global energy company Karpowership, has signed a contract with Iraq's Ministry of Electricity and the General Company for Electric Energy Production / Southern to deliver up to 590 MW of electricity through two Powership vessels.

The vessels, including the Orka Sultan, will be deployed to the ports of Khor Al Zubair and Umm Qasr in Basra, with operations expected to begin in August 2025. The initial contract covers a 71-day period and is aimed at stabilising the national grid and meeting rising demand.

Karpowership's Chief Commercial Officer, Zeynep Harezi Yılmaz, said the agreement represents "a strong step toward bridging the electricity gap and advancing Iraq's energy resilience."

The Powerships are self-contained, multi-fuel enabled floating power plants that provide a fast, cost-effective alternative to traditional land-based infrastructure, which typically requires longer construction timelines.
