Major Initiative to Improve Iraqi Aviation Standards

By John Lee.

The Iraqi government has approved the formation of a working group, chaired by the head of the Iraq Civil Aviation Authority (ICAA), to oversee the licensing of Baghdad, Basra, Mosul, and Najaf airports. The team will also review the Iraqi Airways and State Company for Air Navigation Services to ensure full compliance with civil aviation regulations under a defined timeline.

As part of this initiative, the ICAA will contract an international firm to assess aviation operations and support Iraq in meeting International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme (USOAP) audit requirements, in coordination with the European Commission for Transport.

Additionally, all airports, Iraqi Airways, and the State Company for Air Navigation Services will be required to engage global auditing firms to ensure their financial and operational procedures meet international accounting standards.

Iraqi Airways has also been directed to procure spare parts exclusively through official manufacturers' representatives and conduct external aircraft maintenance only at facilities approved by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), to achieve higher safety and performance standards.
