Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs George Gerapetritis met recently in Baghdad with Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, where they discussed ways to enhance cooperation across a wide range of sectors including trade, investment, energy, academia, tourism, agriculture, construction, and water management.
Minister Gerapetritis highlighted Iraq as one of Greece's most important trade partners and said both sides had agreed to build on the "untapped potential" in their bilateral economic relations. He cited the 9th session of the Greece-Iraq Joint Ministerial Committee, held in Baghdad earlier this month, as a positive step toward expanding cooperation.
He also expressed Greece's support for a stable political environment in Iraq, viewing it as key to fostering growth and partnership opportunities between the two countries.
In a significant development, Gerapetritis announced that Aegean Airlines will launch the first-ever direct flight from Athens to Baghdad on 16 December 2025, following the recent start of flights between Athens and Erbil. He noted that Greece will be the first European Union country to operate direct air services to Baghdad - a move expected to strengthen economic, cultural, and people-to-people ties.
