Iraq's Ministry of Oil has begun the initial stages of trial operations at the North Refinery-2 and Salahuddin Refinery-3, with a combined refining capacity of 140,000 barrels per day (70,000 bpd each), according to Adnan Mohammed Hamoud, the Deputy Minister of Oil for Refining Affairs.
Hamoud described the achievement as one of the most significant strategic milestones in Iraq's refining sector in recent years, noting the strong support from Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani and close follow-up by Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Minister of Oil Hayan Abdul Ghani. He said the two refineries form a cornerstone of the ministry's strategy to expand refining capacity and improve production efficiency, paving the way for Iraq's entry into international petroleum product markets.
The Deputy Minister added that the new refineries align with the government's vision of enhancing national refining capacity, achieving self-sufficiency in high-quality petroleum products, and exporting surpluses to global markets in support of the national economy and Iraq's position in the regional and global energy landscape.
He emphasised that the projects represent the culmination of months of dedicated national effort, saying, "We worked tirelessly and with precision to implement the plans of the Iraqi government and the Ministry of Oil, and today we are reaping the rewards of these achievements - realised entirely through Iraqi expertise and national commitment."
