Transforming Baghdad's Al-Rasheed Camp into Green Urban Space

By John Lee.

Iraq's National Investment Commission (NIC) has commenced the planting works for the Baghdad Sustainable Forests Project, marking a major environmental transformation aimed at converting the former Al-Rashid [Al-Rasheed] Camp area from a site of waste and pollution into a vast green, sustainable space - the largest urban afforestation project in the capital.

The Commission had previously granted the investment licence for the project, which will feature major recreational and commercial facilities surrounded by extensive green areas. The initiative aligns with Iraq's strategy to attract partners and investors for sustainable development projects. The NIC has provided all necessary facilitation in coordination with relevant government bodies to secure approvals for the project's launch.

Project managers indicated that planting works will include landscaping with native and climate-resilient tree species, creating community green spaces, and establishing educational and awareness facilities to promote environmental protection.

The project reflects the government's commitment to genuine environmental sustainability, combating pollution, and enhancing quality of life in Baghdad. It also involves local community participation in monitoring and maintaining the forests to ensure their long-term success.

Upcoming phases will include monitoring tree growth, conducting regular environmental assessments, launching public awareness programmes on the importance of urban forests, and forming partnerships with educational and civic institutions to support the initiative.

This project represents a milestone in Iraq's environmental agenda and a model of effective cooperation between government agencies and civil society to expand green spaces in the capital.
