Spain Eases Iraq Travel Advisory, Citing Improved Security

By John Lee.

Spain has revised and eased its travel advisory for Iraq, aligning its position with other European countries and recognising the improvement in security conditions and stability across Iraqi cities and provinces.

In updated guidance issued by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Madrid reiterated general non-binding travel precautions applicable worldwide, including health, insurance, and security considerations. The advisory notes that travel is undertaken at the traveller's own risk, highlights the importance of adequate medical and travel insurance, and underlines that no country is entirely immune from security or terrorist risks. Travellers are also encouraged to register with Spain's overseas travel registry prior to departure.

In response, the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed Spain's decision, describing it as a constructive and positive step that reflects growing international confidence in Iraq's security environment. Baghdad said the move supports government efforts to strengthen international partnerships and expand economic, cultural, and tourism cooperation.

The ministry added that the revision underlines the strength of bilateral relations between Iraq and Spain, and more broadly with European countries, while helping to reinforce Iraq's regional and international role.
