Construction has begun on a new field operations centre at the Naft Khana oilfield in Diyala province, marking a new phase of development for the project.
The facility is being developed under a contract signed during Iraq's fifth licensing round between Midland Oil Company (MdOC) and the Chinese firm Geo-Jade, which covers the exploration, development and production of the Naft Khana block. The contract was signed in February 2023 and activated in June of the same year.
The Naft Khana block comprises four oilfields, in addition to several promising undeveloped structures. The project includes the installation of new gas processing facilities with a capacity of 50 million cubic feet per day, completion of seismic surveys by the Iraq Oil Exploration Company, and the signing of a contract to drill eight oil wells. Procurement of the required materials and equipment has also been completed in preparation for drilling and production activities.
The new operations centre is intended to improve operational efficiency, increase gas utilisation and support environmental protection, in line with broader efforts to promote sustainable development.
China's HBP Group is also involved in the project.
