Iraq's State Company for Petrochemical Industries, part of the Ministry of Industry and Minerals, has announced the signing of a national partnership with Noor al-Hilal to establish a new plant for the production of chlorine and caustic soda in Basra.
The company's Director General, Engineer Mazen Abdul Razzaq, said the project will be implemented at the Basra Paper Mill complex and will utilise modern, environmentally friendly membrane cell technology. The plant will have a design capacity of 50 tonnes per day of caustic soda and 44 tonnes per day of chlorine, in addition to producing sodium hypochlorite and hydrochloric acid.
He explained that the project will create around 140 job opportunities and will play an important role in strengthening domestic production of materials used in drinking water disinfection. It will also support the requirements of oil and industrial companies in Basra and other governorates.
The partnership forms part of broader efforts by the Ministry of Industry and Minerals to expand local manufacturing capacity, reduce imports, and enhance value-added industrial activity through cooperation with the domestic private sector.
