Iraqi sources are reporting that Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has withdrawn his candidacy for the position of Prime Minister in the new government.
Both Rudaw and Kurdistan24 quote Firas al-Maslamawi, the spokesperson for Al-Sudani's Reconstruction and Development Coalition, as saying that the incumbent prime minister will step aside in favour of Nouri al-Maliki, the leader of the State of Law Coalition.
At the time of publishing, Al-Sudani has not yet commented on the reports.
Al-Maliki previously served as the prime minister of Iraq from 2006 to 2014.
