US-based KBR has been awarded a major contract by Basra Oil Company (BOC) to provide Integrated Field Management Services (IFMS) for the Majnoon oil field in southern Iraq.
Majnoon is one of the world's largest oil fields, with estimated reserves of more than 38 billion barrels.
Under the IFMS contract, KBR will deliver:
- Upstream engineering services;
- Project and operations management;
- Maintenance services;
- Subsurface drilling and reservoir engineering;
- Implementation of AI and digital technologies to optimise reservoir performance.
The scope covers development, operation and maintenance of the field, with the aim of increasing crude production, modernising facilities and improving operational efficiency.
The project is expected to generate significant local employment, with an initial estimated workforce of approximately 2,000 personnel in Iraq. KBR said it will combine in-country teams with global engineering centres and will support knowledge transfer and training for Iraqi engineers.
The company said the award builds on its existing work in Iraq, including support to the Ministry of Planning on the Iraq Master Plan, maintenance programmes at major oil fields such as Rumaila, and initiatives to monetise flared natural gas.
