Deep Dive: Security chiefs re-emerge as top contenders to lead Iraq
An increasingly bitter contest for Iraq's premiership appears to be coming to a head. Amid a US veto, the candidacy of State of Law bloc leader Nouri Al-Maliki seems to be approaching exhaustion. At the same time, a return to the race by caretaker Prime Minister Muhammad Shia' Al-Sudani, who withdrew in favor of Maliki in January, would face difficult odds.
As a result, attention is increasingly turning to "third-party" candidates who were previously mulled. The most prominent of these are Iraqi National Intelligence Service (INIS) chief Hamid Al-Shatri and National Security Advisor Qasim Al-Araji.
