Limestone Exploration Projects Launched in Muthanna and Wasit

By John Lee.

The Iraqi Geological Survey, part of the Ministry of Industry and Minerals, has begun two projects to explore, assess and develop limestone reserves suitable for cement production in Muthanna and Wasit provinces.

The projects aim to identify and evaluate the quality and quantities of limestone through:

  • Fieldwork and geological studies;
  • Specialised laboratory testing;
  • Assessment against approved cement industry standards.

The authority said the initiative is intended to secure reliable domestic raw material sources, support cement production and reduce reliance on imports.

It added that the projects form part of its broader strategy to develop mineral resources and deploy technical and scientific expertise in support of both the public and private sectors.
