The Federal Commission of Integrity has issued a statement clarifying the background to a criminal complaint before the Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court against a sitting member of the Iraqi Council of Representatives.
According to the Federal Commission of Integrity, the unnamed MP is alleged to have extorted the owner of a residential investment project, demanding that 40% of the project be registered in his name through a member of his office staff, the arrested suspect, in addition to a cash payment of $500,000.
The Commission said the complaint also relates to the MP's alleged interference in official procedures concerning the project and the course of justice, despite holding no legal authority or mandate to do so. The MP is further alleged to have falsely claimed influence over official bodies, including the Commission itself.
The Commission emphasised that all proceedings fall within the scope of proper judicial investigation, and that determining facts, assigning responsibility, and issuing decisions rests exclusively with the judiciary in accordance with the rule of law and constitutional guarantees afforded to all parties.
The statement warned against false claims of affiliation with the Commission or its staff, and cautioned that any attempt to exploit its name to influence judicial or administrative proceedings, or to obstruct the course of justice, would be addressed.
